Welcome to the 53rd German Historician Day in Munich!
From 5th to 8th October 2021 takes place in Munich at the Ludwig Maximilians University of the 53rd German Historician Day. The organizers are pleased to welcome the participants to the historian day under the motto "interpretation of interpretation" and at the same time to celebrate the 125th birthday of the association of historians in Germany in Munich.

Interpretation
The struggles of interpretation accompany historical developments and dynamize their social perception because it is always competitive what is considered true, fair or legitimate in a society. A look at the causes or effects of wars and peace conclusions, state foundations or decay of community, social, economic or cultural upheavals led and lead to interpretation struggles that are often influenced by current problems. The hard conflicts have been under the impression of the catastrophe of the Second World War since the 1960s. Last but not least, the future will be negotiated on competing interpretations of the past.
The fights of interpretation are therefore an important engine for a social and scientific examination of the past, which can have both integrative and split force, as can be seen, for example, on the ambivalent dealings of many east (medium) European countries with their history.
Contemporary interpretation struggles for historians are important sources for contradicting or mutually fertilizing orders, positions and knowledge practices. History can disclose narrative and discourses, the creations, developments and integration with their methodological instruments and thus enable a deeper understanding of the complexity of the present and competing perspectives. Last but not least, interpretation struggles lead to the methodological reflection of the basics of historical knowledge.
The occupation with methodological approaches is now absolutely necessary in view of the dynamically changing framework conditions, such as accelerated media change and the restriction of freedom of research. Perhaps the examination of interpretation of interpretation in the face of politicized attacks on scientific research results is more necessary than ever to make political and social contexts of thinking and acting visible.
